What the scholarship covers

Turkiye Burslari is a full package. You do not pay tuition, and the monthly stipend is meant to cover your living costs. The current monthly amounts, published on the official site, are 6,500 TL for undergraduates, 9,500 TL for master’s students, and 13,000 TL for PhD scholars.

Beyond the stipend, the scholarship includes:

  • Full tuition fees
  • University and department placement (YTB assigns you a place; you do not apply to universities separately)
  • Accommodation
  • Health insurance
  • A one-year Turkish language course at TÖMER
  • One flight to Türkiye at the start of your studies and one return flight when you graduate

One detail matters for graduate applicants: Turkiye Burslari does not award scholarships in health sciences at the master’s and PhD levels. If you are applying for a graduate medical program, this track will not cover it.

The stipend is paid in Turkish lira, so its value in dollars or euros moves with the exchange rate. Plan your budget in lira, not in your home currency.

There is also a Merit Scholarship Program. Students with outstanding grades and strong scores in international exams receive double the regular monthly stipend. If you have a 90% average plus a strong SAT, GRE, or ALES score and a TOEFL or IELTS certificate, you are evaluated for this track automatically.

The Turkish language year

Almost every Turkiye Burslari scholar starts with a full year of Turkish language study at a TÖMER center. You attend classes full time and must reach C1 level by the end of the year. This applies even if your degree program is taught in English.

The language year starts in the autumn after you arrive, so your degree begins about 20 months after you submit your application. Scholars who already hold a C1 Turkish certificate can skip the language year and start their degree directly.

Treat the language year as part of the scholarship, not a delay. You receive your stipend during it, and the C1 certificate helps with daily life, internships, and part-time work in Türkiye.

Who can apply

Citizens of all countries except Türkiye can apply. Turkish citizens, and people who have lost Turkish citizenship, are not eligible.

  • Age limits: under 21 for bachelor’s, under 30 for master’s, under 35 for PhD, and under 45 for research scholarships. These are hard cutoffs measured at the application deadline.
  • Academic minimums: at least 70% for bachelor’s, 75% for master’s and PhD, and 90% for medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.
  • You must have graduated, or be able to graduate, before the academic year starts.
  • You cannot be enrolled at the same degree level in a Turkish university. If you already hold a Turkiye Burslari award, you cannot apply again for the same level.

Treat the grade minimums as a floor. The program is selective, and most successful applicants score well above them.

You must also be in good health. Some programs ask for a health report during the placement stage, so keep your medical documents ready.

Final-year students can apply. If you graduate in 2027, you can submit your application with your current transcripts and a temporary graduation certificate, as long as you complete your degree before the academic year starts.

How to apply: step by step

Applications go through the Turkiye Burslari Application System (TBBS). The whole process is online and free. YTB says no person or institution is authorized to apply on your behalf, so ignore anyone offering to submit your application for a fee.

  1. Create an account on TBBS and verify your email.
  2. Fill in your personal details and education history.
  3. Search the program database and pick up to 12 university and program combinations, in order of preference. YTB places you at one of these based on your profile and interview.
  4. Upload all required documents.
  5. Write your letter of intent. Explain your study plans, why you chose your programs, and what you want to do after graduating.
  6. Review every section and submit before 20 February 2027. You cannot edit your application after submission.

Documents you need

The official application page lists these required documents:

  • A valid identity document, ID card, or passport
  • A photograph taken within the last year that clearly shows you
  • National exam results, if you have them
  • Diploma or temporary graduation certificate
  • Academic transcripts (screenshots and uncertified copies hurt your evaluation)
  • International exam results such as GRE, GMAT, or SAT, if your chosen program requires them
  • Language test results such as TOEFL or DELF, if required
  • PhD applicants only: a research proposal and a sample of your written research

Start collecting these now. Transcripts and certificates take time, especially if you need translations.

Deadlines and timeline

The 2027 window runs from 10 January to 20 February 2027. YTB uses the same January to February window every year.

  • 10 January to 20 February 2027: online applications
  • March to April 2027: application evaluation
  • April to June 2027: interviews for shortlisted candidates
  • Early August 2027: results announced
  • September 2027: scholars travel to Türkiye and begin the Turkish language year
  • Autumn 2028: degree programs start

Note the long gap between applying and starting your degree. Plan your current studies and any work commitments around it.

How selection works

Selection runs in stages. First, YTB screens applications for eligibility and complete documents. Then expert committees evaluate the eligible applications on academic record and fit.

Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews. Undergraduate applicants may also sit a short test. After interviews, YTB makes final placements among your 12 preferences.

YTB’s own materials say about 5,000 new scholarships are awarded each year, with around 15,000 scholars currently studying in Türkiye and roughly 100,000 alumni worldwide. Third-party trackers report well over 100,000 applications a year, so the acceptance rate sits below 10%.

The interview is the stage most applicants underestimate. Expect questions about your field of study, why you chose your programs, and your plans after graduation. Undergraduate candidates may also sit a short general test. Answer in the language you are most comfortable with; interpreters are available.

A strong academic record and a specific, honest letter of intent are what separate successful applications from the rest.

Tips to strengthen your application

  • Aim above the minimums. The cutoffs are 70%, 75%, and 90%, but admitted students usually exceed them by a clear margin.
  • Be specific in your letter of intent. Name the programs, departments, and professors that match your background. Explain why Türkiye, not just why a scholarship.
  • Order your 12 preferences carefully. Put your genuine first choices at the top. YTB can place you at any of them.
  • Add international test scores if you have them. SAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, or IELTS scores strengthen an application even when the program does not require them.
  • Keep a backup plan. If the age or grade cutoffs rule you out, or you want a second option in the region, look at the YTB-IsDB Joint Scholarship 2026 in Turkey and the Azerbaijan Government Scholarship 2026-27.
